POSITION TITLE: Gear Technology Senior Editor

POSITION OBJECTIVE: The Senior Editor is the primary person responsible for content across the Gear Technology brand, including the print magazine, website, e-mail newsletters, blog and social media. This includes planning and editing all technical content for Gear Technology magazine, communication with authors, securing copyrights and coordinating technical review. It also includes significant feature writing to cover the news, events and technology of the gear industry.

The Senior Editor is a high-profile public ambassador for both the magazine and AGMA. This position regularly interacts with members of the industry, including corporate executives from supplier and member companies, as well as individuals working in the gear industry. The Senior Editor will regularly interact with members of the industry at trade events, as well as online via social media.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee all aspects of technical articles (approximately three articles per issue), including communicating with authors, securing copyright permissions and maintaining records of such, coordinating technical review, gathering and submitting all required materials to art department, editing and proofreading final version, and sending out for author approval.

Writing at least one feature article per issue, based on topics planned with the rest of the editorial team.

Preparation of the Product News and Industry News departments.

Development of other departments, including working with authors to create columns for Voices and Ask the Expert

Writing the Addendum column, as assigned

Editing and proofreading each article in the issue to assure conformance to Gear Technology style.

ADDITIONAL EDITORIAL DUTIES:

Geartechnology.com oversee content for the blog, online news sections, videos and buyers guide. Content should be updated daily.

Gear Technology e-mail newsletter Oversee the planning of articles in our weekly newsletter according to our editorial calendar, working with authors to provide content or writing as necessary.

Power Transmission Engineering magazine write feature articles and/or columns (such as Power Play) or work with authors as assigned.

Powertransmission.com Blogs and features as assigned,

Social Media Post at least weekly on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to engage with our audience and expand network of connections.

Planning Annual creation of media kit and editorial calendar, participation in weekly meetings with editorial staff.

Events Attending industry trade shows, open houses, seminars, etc. This will occasionally require out of state travel.

Video Interview subjects on camera for GT TV (mostly at trade shows); participate in webinars (as host or emcee).

Assist Publisher and other AGMA staff with editorial projects as needed.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
5+ years experience in substantive editing, copy editing, and proofreading.

5+ years experience in journalistic interviewing, reporting and writing (news and/or feature).

Bachelors Degree, preferably in Journalism, English or Communications.

Ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Proficiency with computer applications, including Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word.

Experience with and comfort using online content management systems (such as WordPress or similar).

Excellent communication skills and professionalism, whether by e-mail, telephone, in person or via video chat.

Deep understanding, knowledge, and feel for standard American English usage, grammar, mechanics, and spelling.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous work as a magazine editor for a professional trade publication.

Experience writing and editing about complex engineering and manufacturing related topics.

Comfort working with mathematical formulas and scientific nomenclature.

Salary is commensurate with experience; benefits include health and dental insurance; 401k; paid annual and sick leave, holidays and more. Our physical office is located in Elk Grove Village, IL. Employees have the option of working from the office or from home (subject to their supervisor's approval and continued demonstration of the ability to be productive in that environment), and we have a blend of employees who are fully remote and fully in-office.
