"Welcome to our blog. We're professors in the Newspaper and Online Journalism Department at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Our blog and our book, "Think Like an Editor," are all about doing, sure, because there is a long and growing "to do" list in news operations of all kinds. But there's a reason the book and blog title emphasize thinking. It's underrated. It's brainpower that separates the best from the rest, especially now. Your ability to think well — and fast — will set you apart. As we note in our first weekly video blog post, and as we'll pursue in the first couple of follow-ups, it starts with having good ideas. And it never ends.

We hope as students and professors you will visit us, subscribe to our RSS and Twitter feeds, and comment freely. We welcome your suggestions as well, and we hope you will join in and think along, either as part of a class or on your own. Professors, please drop us an e-mail if you'd like your class to participate as a community. Commenting is open on every post. We'd like to nurture a group of original posters who can start threads as well — students, teachers or working journalists — so we'd love to hear from you about that.

We know the times are a bit challenging, but there are always good jobs for good people, and we are all about forming a community not just of the good — but the best.
